Website Transformation: Revitalizing with Umbraco

For future-proofed scalability and flexibility.

Challenge

An outdated legacy CMS, user experience/accessibility issues, and data integration complexities were limiting CHKD's ability to serve their audience and portray a modern, efficient digital presence.

Solution

Diagram worked closely with CHKD to create a modern digital experience that is engaging, accessible, and easy to manage. The migration from Ektron to Umbraco introduced a flexible, scalable, and secure platform that improved both front-end user experience and backend content management.

Background

Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters (CHKD) is a leading pediatric hospital dedicated to providing high-quality care to children and their families. Recognizing the need to modernize its digital experience, CHKD partnered with Diagram to migrate their CMS from Ektron to Umbraco, completely revamping their website design, enhancing data integrations, and prioritizing web accessibility. The goal was to create an intuitive, user-friendly platform that puts patient families first while streamlining content management and backend infrastructure.

CHKD’s digital infrastructure presented several obstacles:

  • Outdated CMS Technology: Ektron’s legacy platform restricted content creation and updates, making it cumbersome for the hospital’s team to manage the website effectively.
  • User Experience Issues: The website was overloaded with content but lacked a cohesive design, making it difficult for patients, families, and referring physicians to navigate.
  • Mobile Responsiveness: With most users accessing the site via mobile devices, the lack of optimization led to a frustrating experience.
  • Inefficient Content Management: Rigid functionality within the old CMS made publishing and maintaining content a slow and inefficient process.
  • Data Integration Complexity: Managing third-party integrations and legacy applications added unnecessary maintenance overhead and made interoperability a challenge.

CMS Strategy Seamless CMS Migration

Before making the switch, we conducted a thorough evaluation to determine the best CMS solution for CHKD’s long-term needs. Umbraco stood out for its flexibility, scalability, and intuitive content management capabilities. The migration process was structured to minimize downtime and ensure a seamless transition, allowing CHKD’s team to quickly adapt to the new system.

Front-end Design A Patient-First Website Redesign

A complete website overhaul was necessary to better serve CHKD’s audience. We developed a clean, responsive design optimized for both desktop and mobile users, ensuring accessibility compliance with WCAG standards. By creating a visually engaging site that aligns with CHKD’s mission of care and compassion, we provided an experience that’s not only functional but also welcoming and intuitive for families seeking critical healthcare information.

Data Integration Streamlined Data Integrations for Efficiency

CHKD’s website relied on various third-party tools for appointment scheduling, patient portals, and donation platforms. We simplified and optimized these integrations, ensuring seamless connectivity between systems. This enhancement reduced maintenance overhead and improved data flow, enabling a more efficient user experience for both patients and hospital administrators.

Cloud Strategy A Secure, Scalable Cloud Infrastructure

To support CHKD’s long-term digital growth, we implemented a custom Microsoft Azure hosting solution. This cloud-based infrastructure delivers enhanced security, reliability, and scalability, ensuring that CHKD’s website can continue to evolve and expand without performance concerns.

Results Improvements Across Key Performance Metrics

The website redesign and rebuild delivered meaningful improvements in both user experience and site performance:
  • Improved Search & Provider Tools: The newly redesigned site search and provider finder tools received overwhelmingly positive feedback from internal teams and site visitors, replacing two of the most commonly cited pain points from the previous site.
  • Enhanced Look & Feel: The updated visual design has been well received, with users commenting on the cleaner, more modern interface — improving overall perception of the brand’s digital presence.
  • Increased User Engagement: Post-launch analytics indicate a measurable increase in user engagement and improved navigation behaviors compared to the same timeframe the previous year.
  • Traffic Growth to Priority Pages: High-value pages — including Our Surgeons, Our Specialists, Mental Health, Find a Provider, Urgent Care, MyCHKD, Locations, and Billing — saw noticeable growth in visits year-over-year, indicating stronger alignment between user intent and site structure.
  • More Effective CTAs: While detailed click-through tracking is in progress, early feedback suggests that calls to action are more visible and relevant, creating stronger paths to conversion.
